Fundamentals Of An Excellent Password Manager

by Mark Sandford

As the number of login credentials people use online on a daily basis increases, maintaining a strong password policy can become a serious challenge. This is an activity that should be given considerable thought, especially as the risk of identity theft and related crimes are on the rise. Keeping a list of all your passwords in a text file is not a recommended approach, if this was to be accessed by a hacker all your online accounts would be compromised. The solution to this problem is to use professional password manager software.

There are various applications available that are designed for this exact purpose. The effectiveness and quality of the software does vary. If you want to minimize the risk of having your credentials stolen, you will need to think carefully about what program to install. The features outlined below should be present on the application you choose.

Encryption is essential. Stored data should be present in an encrypted form, using protocols that have been tested and proven to be effective. The software should be encrypted in such a way to defend against all the latest threats. Examples of the most popular encryption algorithms include DES (Data Encryption Standard), and AES (Advanced Encryption Standard). Do not waste your time with those applications which store your data in clear text.

Ease of use is another important consideration. It is important to be able to retrieve your user-names and passwords with a single click of your mouse. There is some software available which is displayed as a browser toolbar, allowing you to automatically recover data when required. The program should be able to identify the page URL being visited and provide you with the correct login credentials.

Avoid software which requires you to copy and paste data from the interface to the entrance fields. If the program does not have the intelligence to identify what page is being visited and the fields that need to be filled, it may also be lacking in other areas. Those applications with the most options are likely to be the best option.

Do not underestimate the opinions of other individuals. Before you build a brief set of options, spend some time checking out opinions of the newest password manager software. It should not demand long to determine which application provides the best ratings and which miss the mark.

Explore whether the program you are thinking of using would be compatible with your operating system as well as your preferred browser. If you have an older version of Windows, or a Mac, not every software would be compatible. Likewise, if you use a browser that is not among the most popular, the program chosen may not work.

These criteria should all be explored before you decide on which password manager to use. There are other features that may also be desirable, for example the ability to regularly modify the data stored. Do not take risks with online security, the threats are very much real.
