U.S. Government Prohibited Huawei From Biding Because Of National Security?

by Charles Phillips

As the U.S. government forbade Huawei to participate in the U.S. construction of emergency networks due to the national security considerations, Huawei today asked the U.S. government to give an explanation.

Huawei spokesman in Washington said today in an e-mail that the U.S. Commerce Department last week notified Huawei that for national security considerations, the U.S. government prohibit Huawei from participating in the assessment of the emergency equipment interoperability testing. Since this is a baseless decision, which may adversely affect Huawei's business activities in the United States, the United States Government must have a reasonable explanation.

As early as 2001, Huawei established U.S. operations headquarters in Texas City. The company said it has a total of 1,500 employees in the United States. It has so far invested $ 6.1 billion for the purchase of U.S. technology products and services. Huawei's efforts to expand their business in the United States suffered several blocks from the U.S. lawmakers. They suspected Huawei is related with the Chinese military. Huawei denied. Huawei would like to know what the legal provisions and regulatory system that U.S. government based on when it made the latest decision.

The spokesman of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Kevin Griffith said in the e-mail in response to the media that because of the national security considerations of the U.S. government, Huawei will not participate in this project. He declined to elaborate on what specific concerns. In February, the U.S. foreign investment committee forced Huawei revoke transactions to acquire 3Leaf Systems' patents, as U.S. lawmakers said the acquisition could form a serious risk to the U.S. computer networks.

In 2008 and 2010, Huawei failed in the bidding for 3Com, 2Wire and Motorola's wireless business. Huawei said in its annual report that the company's global workforce is110,000 people.

The analyst say that the government project that excluded Huawei is called Public Safety 700-MHz Demonstration Network. It is responsible by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology and the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Management agencies. The network can help with emergency contact. Huawei's efforts in the project are for stranded "unknown reasons".
