Chosing the Best Motherboard - Quality over Quantity
When you embark on the task of building a gaming pc, typically one of the goals is to get the best of each sort of hardware. This is true whether or not you are looking for the true BEST motherboard (for example) - where you can look at each motherboard available, compare the offerings it has and take a look at baselines - and is true also when you are looking at getting the best motherboard for a certain price bracket (or any other piece of hardware).
So what does it mean to find the best part for a system? Speaking motherboards, in addition to the motherboard which has the best parts built in and scores the best on charts, I believe it's also critical to have a look at the company that makes the motherboard. Does that company have a history of quality products, or will they have a history of issues? How does the precise motherboard you are looking at get reviewed in terms of stability and quality?
When valuing hardware for building computers it is straightforward to simply look at charts. Charts provide us quantifiable interpretations of the 'power ' of each component. You could simply look at a chart for each element - motherboard, processor, video card, ram, drive, case, heatsink - pick the part at the very top of each one of these charts and build what you believe is "the best" computer.
What will occur if one of those components is built by a company that doesn't have the best track record? You spend a certain quantity of cash but then run into Problems and have to spend additional money before long. The endurance of that particular system - in terms of power - isn't in question. Glaringly by the charts it is at the very top. The longevity is in question as the elements may not work fine together or you may end up with a bomb component that causes Problems and destroys your complete system.
So choosing a motherboard made by a good company is a part of the process of finding the best motherboard. At the moment there are 3 commonly referenced and respected motherboard makers - yes there are others, but these three are 'the best ' re quality. Asus, ASRock, and Gigabyte. I personally like Asus, as they have had a foundation of very good quality and wonderful customer service for a considerable time - I've used them almost exclusively for the past 10 years. So if you're trying to find the best motherboard, don't always glance at the top of the charts - keep an eye open for the one that's manufactured by the company with the best past record and consumer service, then look at the charts.
