The Birth of Internet Access

by John Jenkins

Video games have been getting a bad rap. Sure, a few involve nothing more than pointing several deadly weapons at the Undead and blasting them into a bajillion pieces. And there are cases of people wasting otherwise productive hours conquering a virtual kingdom and accumulating pixelized gold instead of going out and getting a real job.

But there are many, many times when video games actually provide a noble purpose in society. When they make you a better person. Or at least, a smarter person.

Let's just imagine for a moment that by some miracle my work desk was picture perfect clean and tidy, so there I sit with my coffee in one hand and my trusty camera on the other. I could bet my bottom dollar that at some stage as I am distracted or tired that my coffee and my camera will meet in some unfortunate accident.

In the 1980s, the majority of individuals with Internet access were mainly comprised of scientists and researchers. By the early 1990s, many companies, now more commonly referred to as Internet service providers (ISP's) started offering Internet access to average home users. This was the key transition point that allowed the average individual with a simple modem and computer configuration to acquire Internet access.

Digital photo card readers are very inexpensive to buy if your PC does not have one already installed. Card readers are available as USB external hardware or internal hardware. You may decide on a multi card reader or choose a card reader specifically made for your memory card. I recommend a multi card reader for versatility. If choosing to install an internal card reader you may very easily do this yourself by simply removing your unused "A" drive and replacing your photo card reader in this position. If you are uncomfortable with opening your PC your local computer technician will do this for you, usually at a minimum fee and with no fuss.

And then there are the strategy games. Conquering the world, running a city, shaping an empire from a handful of barbarian villages to being the first country to set up a space station on Mars-obviously, these aren't just random point and shoot games. They're about the same skills you learn in business school, but with cooler graphics: how to manage resources, motivate people, and set goals.
