Your Organization Can Use Rackmount Servers For Many Purposes

by Gavin Shields

There are several advantages to getting a rack server. First of all, this type of server takes up less physical space than a regular server. It is designed to fit in the small amount of space that is available in a data center rack.

There are other uses for this type of server as well. Other great uses include file sharing, print server, web caching, proxy services and backups. In many cases, some or all of these functions can be performed by a single server since the computing resources required are quite low.

The cost of a rack server is generally comparable with a regular server. However, many IT managers will find they spend a bit more on a server that is designed to go in rack. For example, many will want to have two power supplies in every server to reduce the chances of an outage. The cost of rails will also add a little bit to the cost.

If the server is running on the Linux operating system instead of Windows, it is possible to get by with very cheap and old hardware. That is why the Linux operating system is very popular in many consumer computing devices such as wireless routers.

One of the primary mistakes that organizations make is that they believe that all servers are identical. As with every other program you can get for your computer (or in this case, a piece of hardware), different server's are made for various types of companies.

If a computer needs to be purchased, it is not necessary to buy anything that is powerful. The least powerful and cheapest computer will probably work. The only place not to skimp is the hard drive if it will be a media server in order to store movies and music. It may also be a good idea to buy an uninterruptible power supply so that power outages don't cause corrupted data on the server.

A great application for a home server is to function as a proxy server. This means all web browser traffic has to go through the server before going to the Internet. For parents who want to monitor their children's Internet activity, having a proxy server is a great thing.

Another great choice for the server is a Unix based operating system. The best known Unix operating system and the most widely used one is Linux. It's a great choice since it is stable and fast. Best of all, there are many free Linux distributions. Other Unix operating systems that are widely used in commercial environments include Oracle Solaris and IBM's AIX.
