An Overview Of DAM Software

by Steven Harrison

The people charged with managing a large number of assets for a company face a lot of challenges in carrying out their duties. Their roles involve the coordination of all the activities of all the individuals involved in the process. The DAM software provides a solution to this problem by facilitating the collection and organization of all the files involved. These files mainly consist of images, videos and documents. This is a powerful application which helps in downloading, optimizing, grouping, and archiving, thinning, renaming, rating, backing up, maintaining and exporting of these files.

The files of videos, documents and images to be managed are assembled and stored in digital setups. The digital format in which they are stored ensures a higher resolution is attained. Each of the assets has its own metadata which describes the type of its contents, techniques for encoding and decoding it, access rights and the history leading to the point of capture. The coverage of metadata varies from one system to another.

This software is a major component of the digital asset management system. These systems are classified into three groups according to their purpose. The brand systems allow the stored files of an organization to be reused. The files in a brand system contain information on the marketing and sales activities of a business. This may be marketing fonts and collateral, product imagery among others.

The library asset management system on the other hand consists of files that are not regularly changed and manages their storage and retrieval in large volumes. It is commonly applied in the archiving of photos and videos. The production system takes care of digital media productions. These include animation, 3D feature film, video game and shots of visual effects and many others.

This software has a several benefits to both the user and the administrator. Their administration is not complex and can be conducted from any place. They are versioned and automated and are tailored with additional features for easy operation. A majority of developers offer technical assistance, advice, support and guidance which enhance user operations.

Some applications have web server consoles which allow administrators to monitor the process of managing assets through a web browser and allows for central administration. These allow for the creation of an online gallery and portfolio of files. They enable users to keep backup copies of documents and image history which ensures files are not lost or overwritten. The user friendly interface and their multi-language support is beneficial to users.

The market has a wide variety of this software and each is tailored with its own addition features to increase the effectiveness. This application can either be open source or proprietary. The main advantage of open source applications is that they allow room for tailoring them according to the specific user needs due to their flexibility. Business owners are required to carry out a survey in order to select a product perfect for their needs.

The implementation of the DAM software has introduced a high level of efficiency in the digital asset management process. This is by far the most perfect to the difficulties that were faced before their discovery. Businesses are now able to create a secure database that stores organized digital photos and graphic files. These libraries are fully searchable and support sharing of files among many users. They are also easy to update, retrieve and maintain.
