Wireless Network Ideas

by James Shelton

Let's say you have a wireless network. Have you thought of all the cool things you can do with it? With a little creativity you can really come up with fascinating ideas - here are a few to get you on your way.

Upload Files to Your Car

How would you like to turn your car into moving file storage? You can achieve this using a Wi-Fi hard disk - just set it up in the car and you can access it by Wi-Fi whenever you want. This means you can always have your documents accessible wherever you go (if you travel by car). Getting some new tunes for the drive becomes a matter of sending the music files over from your home computer and finding them waiting for you in the car.

These Wi-Fi hard drives tend to have a capacity of around 500GB. They have car chargers so you can keep them in your car permanently.

Make a Neighborhood-Wide Network

You can extend the range of wireless networks pretty far with the right tools. If your neighbors are into it, you could turn your area into a wireless hotspot. Share one super-fast Internet connection and divide up the cost - it'll probably save you lots of money! The way to do this is by setting up the actual modem in a central location and using wireless repeaters and directional antennas to boost the signal into all the areas that need coverage. There are repeaters like the Hawking HOW2R1 that are designed for use outdoors, and the company Amped specializes in high-range repeaters for bridging large gaps.

Naturally, you would need a high-end internet connection package - too many devices sharing one normal internet connection would be slow for everyone. Don't forget to appoint a network administrator to take care of connectivity problems.
