How To Find Laptops Under 300 Dollars

by Cory Nelson

Some great and practical laptops under 300 dollars are available. Because the technology for computers moves ahead so quickly, slightly older versions quickly become lower-end and much less expensive as well. This allows buyers to find computers that will meet their needs at economical prices. Most people do not need the most powerful computer available to run common functions.

First, decide what functions are necessary. For basic functions like word processing, exploring the Internet, and most programs, a small laptop or notebook will suffice. Versions under 300 dollars are available with processor speeds ranging from 1.0 to 1.6 GHz. They have plenty of space in the hard drives to hold many documents and files, usually averaging around 250 to 300 GB. The memory available ranges from 1 GB to 4 GB.

Make sure each component has the power needed. A laptop can have enough memory and room in the hard drive, but the CPU may be too slow. It helps to check the minimum requirements of the programs that will be run in the computer before it is purchased. Some larger programs and extensive multi-tasking may not be possible or run very slow.

Some advantages of these kinds of models are the size and weight. Often they may forgo features such as a DVD player. The screens also tend to be too small for some people. However, they take up little space and are very portable. They are small and light enough to be carried under the arm like a book. However, because of the limited CPU capabilities and memory, they may not be able to accommodate heavy multi-tasking and some complex programs.

A refurbished laptop may be an option for consumers who prefer something faster or a bigger size. Refurbished computers were returned to the store after customers use them for a little while but decided they were not right for them. Since they do not have defects but the packaging has been opened, the store sells them at a reduced price.

These are excellent opportunities for other buyers to receive discounts, which can be around $100 off the retail price. When shopping at a store, ask if any refurbished laptops are available. Some store websites include a section of refurbished items that shoppers can review.

Before buying a refurbished item, be sure to ask about the warranty. If the first user registered it, the warranty would have already been activated. If it has been sitting at the store for some time after the return, the time on the warranty may have been reduced or run out. See if the warranty can be extended.

Search newspaper in online ads for used laptops. When owners upgrade, sometimes they would like to get some money back from their old model. One can get a great deal, but the drawback is that the computer has accumulated some wear and tear. A warrant from the manufacturer may not be available, but check local tech centers which might offer reasonable service contracts.

Laptops under 300 dollars are available to consumers who have tight budgets but need reliable computers. Although they may not be able to run some of the large and complex programs, they can meet basic needs. The fastest machines are usually not necessary for the average user. Check for used or refurbished computers as well.
