The Pros And Cons Of The Sony Playstation 3

by Rasphald Belownski

The PlayStation 3 is the 3rd gaming console produced by Sony Computer Entertainment in their PlayStation series. It is included in the seventh generation of video game consoles together with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. It was released way back in 2006 and has since become very popular among avid gamers.

The PlayStation 3 is an excellent piece of entertainment equipment. It no longer is just a gaming system, it could also handle hi-def movies and digital TV, store images as well as music, and even allow their users to connect to the Internet. The PS3 is a powerful system because it uses a CPU that is composed of one 3.2 GHz Power Processing Element or PPE and eight Synergistic Processing Elements or SPEs. As a result of this multiple core design, the system can designate each core to a certain task.

This enables highly effective multitasking capacity, and far better gaming experience. It also features a dedicated graphics processing unit which can output resolutions up to 1080p HD. As opposed to other gaming consoles, the PS3 can handle Blu-ray discs, and is possibly one reason why a number of people seem to have a preference for this kind of console. Increasing the appeal of the PS3 are the platform exclusive games such as Gran Turismo and Final Fantasy. Furthermore, the PlayStation community is provided with a great amount of third party support, this means, you can find more games and add-ons for the PS3 than the other video game consoles.

You must know though that the PS3 is not devoid of problems. One issue which makes buyers think twice about getting a PS3 is the price - the most affordable model will cost you $249 in most retail outlets. When it was first introduced, it was also the largest among the three gaming consoles from the same generation. Sony has released a PS3 slim to deal with this matter though, but that also meant giving up some features, most notably, the option to run third party OS. The much mentioned PS3 YLOD, short for Yellow Light of Death, is also one more reason why individuals are reluctant about buying this unit.

Fundamentally what happens is that some owners of the original PS3 come across a fault indicator - a yellow flashing light, which manifests due to a non-specific hardware failure that renders the system unusable . The Yellow light on ps3 is not as prevalent in the newer models though, and many people who have the older models were able to resolve the issue by sending their units back to Sony for repairs. Some PS3 gamers, especially those whose machines are no longer covered by warranty, even did the repair themselves successfully.
