Finding The Best CDN Service

by Juliette Cruz

CDN service providers supply web businesses with a stable environment from which to provide services and products. Regardless of the type of site you have, you will want to be sure your visitors can access it easily day and night. The providers supply services to render your site and all its images and videos without problems. Any interruptions can be damaging to your reputation with visitors.

Shared or single server hosting solutions are fine when you first begin. However, when your online business grows, having such a setup can be very dangerous. A distributed network provider creates a much more stable environment, increases site rendering speeds, and reduces the risk. Having multiple sites on a shared server means each site can have a detrimental effect to all the other sites hosted on the server.

One of the first items you will want to consider is the bandwidth requirements for your site. Most providers charge by the gigabyte that is used. You will purchase a package and then pay a per gig amount that you go over your allotment. If you see that you constantly need more bandwidth, it is best to reach for the higher package instead of paying overage fees.

Evaluate your site to determine the technology you will need. Each provider will deliver content via HTTP protocols. However, not all have the hardware in place to provide streaming video services. Live streaming is even rarer. As your needs grow, be sure to make sure your provider can continue to provide the services you will require.

Support is critical to your success. If you are unsure of their level of support, take the time to call their support line at different times. If they do not answer quickly or only have email based support you may want to consider checking other services. If your website is your portal to your customers, you must be able to reach the company for support anytime there is a problem. Their response or lack thereof could be costly to your business reputation.

The most important part of your research will include reputation research. You will want to find out how long they have been in business, the approximate number of customers they have, financial stability, and look for complaints from customers. Most of this can be found through simple web searches. With many companies growing, merging, and going out of business, you will not want to be stuck with a service that is having trouble keeping up.

The price should be the lowest denominator in the decision process. Though price is important when working with a budget, you want to measure the cost based on other factors as well. If you buy the cheapest service and have many problems, your bottom line will be affected. Two providers may have identical pricing plans for very different reasons. One may be providing below cost service to compete. Another may have a larger customer base which allows them to keep the prices low. Without doing background business and reputation checks on the various providers you may not be able to truly compare each one.

If you want to stay competitive, you need to choose the best CDN service provider within your budget. The actual price has very little to do with the service that is provided. Do your homework and research each provider so you can make the most educated decision. Your business and customers will depend on it.
