How To Build A Media Server

by Liz Lamb

There are many people around today who have become involved in collecting various multimedia files from the internet. The shear volume of these files often demands that a solution for mass storage and easy access may be found. In this regard there are many options which may be considered. Even though there are many different solutions available for a media server, they all have many things in common. Let us tell you how to build a media server.

Many multimedia files are quite large which can cause a library to quickly extend to occupy many gigabytes of storage space. These then need to be housed in a CPU case which has enough areas dedicated to housing hard drives. A basic system with a 2 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM will make a perfect one, as its main function will to serve and store the files.

The hard drives used should have sufficient capacity as a library can quickly fill many gigabytes of space. Many people suggest a motherboard with at least a 2 GHz processor and 2 GB of RAM.

It is a good idea to make it have an Ethernet card to allow it to connect to the network. In addition to the factors mentioned above there should also be the possibility of producing CDs and DVDs, and large external storage devices are also handy.

Open source software opens the opportunity for obtaining a good operating system such as Linux at no charge. There are also two commercial operating systems available which can be used to run a server. These are Windows and Mac Os X.

Once the operating system has been sorted out, there are some specialized software required for dealing with the various kinds of media files which are usually found on a media database. Even here, there are many choices you can use to build a media server. Some of these are available as open source, while others will have to be bought as commercial software.
