What's the Difference Between Ripping & Copying a DVD?

by James Belle

Here's a very short posting about how to rip DVD contents to another disk drive. Some people think that DVD copying software as well as other media copying tools are all the same.

Let's talk about what the differences are so that you know what you should get.

1. Copying a DVD to another disk with software:

These tools are the ones that are advertised the most. You'll see commercials for these all over the place. They do exactly what they say. If you want to make an exact copy of a DVD then this is what you need. You'll have to buy some blank DVDs though.

Caution: If you don't own the DVD, you may get in trouble for illegally copying DVDs.

2. Copying the video contents to another source (Ripping):

Instead of burning or copying a DVD, you might want to get the video files and play it on some other media device or hardware. Like your iPhone or iPad, or something like that. These devices obviously can't play a DVD, so what you do is you just "rip" the DVD contents and play it in another format like AVI or something.

When ripping a DVD you will most certainly lose some of the "DVD features" since you are transforming it into a regular video file.

3. Downloading a DVD copying software tool that rips DVDs too:

There are many tools available that can show you how to rip DVD video files, and can also duplicate the DVD or Blu-Ray disks that you have. I'll show you one below or at least show you a place where you can find the best kinds of these tools.

4. Go to the store, or download off of the Internet?

You should do what you feel is best. But I always recommend downloading a DVD copying software program from the Internet because they are much less expensive and can be a higher quality.

When you do get something off of the Internet, particularly from a smaller company, you will have direct access to speak with the developers and get help directly from them.
