They Do It Again - Small Business Software Review

by David Hayes

It's a total waste of time and money. Well, this would be the third time I've had to "update/upgrade" Quicken. For example, do not run an instance of Firefox as admin, but be running Quicken as a lower level user. This will break manual downloads really quickly. They graciously sent me link to download 2008 Home & Business for free. I've always been happy with their customer service, and they listen to the 'voice of the customer.' So if there's a method/feature you think could make the product significantly more valuable, or if you just have a question, please feel free to tell them. I'll gladly pay a bit more for something that WORKS! I'm flabbergasted by how hard this product is to use.

They have made it harder to use and removed some functions altogether. If you don't download transitions from your bank then don't bother with this. And of course they changed the data format. Quicken being practically the only game in town, and I being a long time user of quicken and TurboTax was what dictated my purchase. I guess Intuit went with the lowest bidder. Quicken still loads junkware when loading the program.

Hours later my stuff is still importing one transaction at a time, and each transaction requires several clicks. This is not going to work for active traders and investors!

None of the available "help" options are of much help, and there is no documentation that I can find unless I go to the bookstore and buy a manual. Their support stinks. They didn't hide any menus/buttons, etc. While the software is good minus the online component, I can't in good conscience give it a good or mediocre rating for the following reasons: 1. This was true, but only to ask a question that could've been answered by reading the initial request, had the rep been paying attention. I am smiling right now just because the situation is so laughably bad. The account categories were very accurate and I only had to change a couple of them (bought gas at a food store.) I also exported to Excel 2010 with no problem. When deciding if this software is for you consider what you need it to do.

So in these cases, if your banks are already supported and you don't use auto-categorization, then these enhancements are irrelevant. However, if you download transactions from your banking and investment institutions, the download window does not show up when you are in this mode, so you will be forced to continue using the individual account registers anyway.

No way. None of that is there. My feeling is that the programmers at Intuit must be really depressed, either because they have to put out such a mess of a product, or they put out a mess of a product because they're really depressed. If there was a viable alternative to Quicken I'd be all over it in a New York second, but there isn't.
