Not So Great - Small Business Payroll Software Critique

by Lillian Lopez

AD I had been using QuickBooks 2000 for the last decade for my home business. I decided it was time to get updated software. This program makes it easy to manage income & expenses, complete tax filings and was also a great help in the drafting of my business proposal. I can't say enough about it and definitely would recommend it as a start-up business tool. The two programs have a totally different look and flow to how information is entered and displayed. At first, of course everything looks confusing. But then attempting to update credit card balances, import past investment and banking statements, and make it all work, another story. It was hours of frustration with no resolution. I upgraded to Quicken H&B 2011 from the 2005 version. To be honest, I just don't see how this is really any better.

If you do a bit of research Quicken dropped support for importing from excel for a new QFX format that requires direct download from banks, etc. Using this format makes them money, because the bank pays a licensing fee to Intuit when people try to sync bank info to Quicken. First, it is difficult (or impossible") to generate completely customizable graphs of the financial information I wish to look at. I had no difficulty generating endless graphs of expenses and income on different times scales or using different sub-categories using QuickBooks (circa 2002).

It was well worth the effort and I will not upgrade again before doing major homework on the software. I have been using Quicken 2008 and this is a totally worthless upgrade.

I upgraded from Quicken Home & Business 2010 to 2011. All 3 of my existing saved cash flow reports were corrupted in the upgrade process. He repeated told me to do it the intuitive way which was wrong but could not tell me how to do it correctly. He researched and asked others. Bank of America is going over to a new system most likely by the end of the year, which will make the download feature of their accounts work better (at least so they say). All in all: If it all would have worked seamlessly I would have given it a five, but given the problems I'm having I'm only giving a 3.

Because of that, my Schedule C was missing all my income for 2010. To fix this I manually added the missing categories to each of the customer payments, making sure to separate income from expenses.

This was recommended by my CPA. Good price and quick shipping equals a solid deal.

Out of the box Quicken 2011 is an easy installation. It converts your old quicken files if you tell it to or you can start from scratch.

This is the official position of their support team on their forums. Here is one way you can import Excel data into Quicken.
