by Paul David

You aren't alone if you've just discovered that your laptop computer charger warms up too frequently. One shouldn't take this issue gently. The overheating of laptop adapters can end up in sparks in the circuit. These sparks can permanently destroy your mainboard or worse, lead straight to a fire. If you suspect your power supply isn't in good shape, get in contact with your manufacturer/seller for a replacement or buy a replacement on the internet.

Cause of overheating:There is no single reason behind the overheating of a laptop chargers. If you connect a low voltage laptop power supply to a laptop, it is likely to get overheated. For example, if your 80 watt laptop power adaptor is getting overheated, your laptop may need a 100 watt one for smooth functioning. Another common cause of overheating is high CPU usage when the power adapter is connected to the laptop. A laptop can make an attempt to drain the additional power to execute a higher number of tasks. The brick containing various electronic components of laptop chargers may also malfunction, thereby causing extra resistance or more heat.

The socket inside your laptop where you insert the power supply can also cause an overheating issue. Electrical items like laptop computers run on a certain type of current at low voltage and fixed ampere readings. Overheating may also be caused when this AC/DC convertor isn't working as it should do. This is a major indicator that the power adapter has now begun to fail. Buying a new charger from a recommended online website or a local retail shop is the easiest way to avoid any issues arising due to overheating.

Check the manufacturer's website for potential recalls:It is possible that a number of overheating cases pertaining to a particular charger or laptop have been surfacing in different parts of the world. This happens when a company ships laptop adapters or devices with some manufacturing flaw. In such cases, most companies recall such faulty components. You will need to contact the manufacturer of the laptop to know more about such offers.

If you are going to use a charger that is prone to overheating you should try and ventilate it as much as possible and don't leave it under such things as a bed cover or pillow. If you are not using the charger always make sure it's switched off from the wall, this should also extend the life of the item as it's not in use as much.

If you think that your laptop charger has burned plastic anywhere remove it from the laptop immediately and switch it off from the wall socket. In such a case it's highly recommended to dispose of it and replace with a new one. Continued use of such a product could lead to a major fire especially if it's placed close to objects such as carpets, furniture or bedding.
