Another Satisfied Customer - Online Finance Software Review
If you do think you'd like to use a budget, there is no better place to start than YNAB. I had always considered a budget before, but didn't like the idea of being forced to only spend a certain amount on food, or not be able to go out to eat if I wanted to.
Thumbs up to this budgeting tool! After wasting hundreds of dollars on Mint.com, Quicken, and Mvelopes, I gave up on budgeting software programs. Currently, it focuses on the essentials...your budget. However, the software is always being improved upon, and all updates are free.
I've used several budgeting tools before and I always get bored with them. For some reason, this YNAB made it more fun for me. However, if you're doing a head-to-head comparison to Mint, you're going to find YNAB (slightly) clunkier to use. Instead of focusing on the very challenging and expensive syncing distraction (it's a large distraction for most financial software), YNAB focuses on sound money principles.
I was able to understand how the software works and have an idea of whether I would like it or not before I even bought it. There was a good bit of setup to do initially and I had to figure out how I would handle the cash envelope system that I use (Financial Peace University Principles) but once I understood how on-budget and off-budget accounts work I was able to understand what to do. I am a retiree (medical professional) needing to watch spending carefully on greatly reduced income. Easy to use with straight-forward operations, I was up and running within 30 minutes. I am really pleased with this purchase and can already see where I need to work on my budget so I pay down my debts. In all honesty, though, that's about it. The only technical issue I've run into so far was when downloading and importing transactions using QFX files (which is actually pretty painless, BTW).
And to make the software work, you have to understand and use the "YNAB Way." This is the first piece of software that I've used that I feel has actually helped me get a budget that helped me plan for the future rather than simply report on the past.
The iPhone app isn't really that useful compared to the main program. A majority of the consumer-grade financial software programs only gives you a static view of what you *spent*.
I used Microsoft Money, Quicken, and Excel spreadsheets I made myself, but none did everything I wanted - keep an "envelope" style monthly budget and my account register. This does both beautifully!
It's like increasing the distance between you and the car ahead when driving on ice! I still use Quicken but their budgeting feature leaves a lot to be desired. I've been looking for a good financial program for years. I've attempted MS Money but it just didn't cut it.
