by Katina Flores

Cost is usually a primary concern when a business is searching for any service or utility. On condition that the options being looked into are up to task, cost will definitely become the determining factor when settling on one option. This also applies when considering server options. Deciding on whether to settle on a dedicated server or colocation service is a good example of where cost determines the end result. When dedicated servers and collocation servers that have the same specs deliver similar levels of service. The choice of one over the other will greatly influence the choice you make because of the long term cost benefits to be realized.

At the time of setup, the cost of co-location is significantly higher since it requires the client to purchase a server. For dedicated server clients, they don't have to purchase a server since they will be using one owned by the data center which means they will require less initial capital for their hosting. Once the colo client has bought a server, the will deliver it to the data center which will provide rack space as well as other services required to run the server. Data center responsibilities consist of server administration, power, bandwidth, security and other like services.

The administration of a collocation server will normally involve a lot of idea changes amongst the client and data center because the server is the clients'. Clients from collocation pay for all services and support provided by the data center for the running of their server. For the dedicated server clients, they will pay an extra amount for the utilization of the server hardware. This is applicable if you consider it will be paid monthly but at the end of periods that are roughly two an additional cost that will cover the contract duration. It may be assumed to be a small amount but in three years it often sums up to a significant amount of money. A difference of as little as $50 per month will translate to $600 every year which is $1800 more in the 3 years. The total sum is enough for you to acquire your own powerful server at the end of the contract whereas for the dedicated server you get no hardware.

Clients from collocation still keep their hardware which could be costing worth more than sixty percent of the original price.

Thinking of a server priced at $3000, the collocation client will pay $1800 less and have hardware worth about $2000. This will be quite beneficial for them at the end of the three year contract since they will come out $3800 better than the dedicated server client. This amount is quite outstanding for any business. There is also an additional benefit of collocation in the form of greater technical experience for the clients since they are more involved in running the servers.
