Don't Buy Online Before You Try - Microsoft Personal Finance Software Critique

by Daniel Sanchez

I'm computer impaired when it comes to doing that. What has it done for me"

I would keep it up for a while, then, all of the sudden, two or three months had gone by where I had not entered anything and it would be an entire evening catching up, just to find out where I had blown the budget. I read about YNAB on a blog and their model was very interesting. You plan for every rainy day that could come. You plan ahead for vacations so you don't come back and realize you've overspent so much that the happiness of vacation is drowned out in the stress of not enough money to get by after. The software looks simple and was painless to setup, but after using it, you will see that it has some really clever features that were put in to deal with life in the real world! YNAB does not let you do a normal accounting of your income and outgo.

I am learning to think whether expenditures fit within my income now - or if I should wait for later, or not spend at all. I am seriously enjoying this process!

A common thread through many of these reviews seems to be along the lines of: "I've tried Microsoft Money and Quicken, and they were good at tracking, but not at really budgeting. Then I tried YNAB, and I've never been happier". This has revolutionized the way our family spends money. The budget is no longer a drudgery, but rather is totally freeing. So some people may need to use YNAB side by side with something like Quicken until it catches up. A few of my issues will be addressed with the release of YNAB 3 (which you will get as an upgrade if you purchase version 2 now). If you're a Dave Ramsey fan like me, then you'll approve of the methods used in YNAB. It uses "Zero Based Budgeting", the "Envelope System", and a "Buffer" as tools to help you get control of your spending.

This system basically works by, as one commenter said, living off your last month's income. While hard to accomplish, once you do, this makes life MUCH easier. It's a bit confusing. This is a great concept that has worked well for me. It requires dedication and commitment on your part to make the program work, but I can assure you that if you buy this program and apply the four rules it will change your financial situation quicker than you can believe. If you are looking for a full accounting program then move on to one of the others, but if like me you are drowning in debt and tired of living from one pay day to another, then seriously consider getting YNAB. Love the free updates as well. I bought the YNAB software after reading recommendations and it had become available for Mac.

This is a vital reference function to me. It is taking so much time and energy to try to learn this system that I am giving up for now and heading back to Quicken. I would recommend this to anyone who is serious about starting and sticking to a budget! We started using this software as a New Year's resolution.
